If you don’t have check sheets to help ensure that you do all the right things to the right things during routine tasks- create them.

One of the most proactive error-reducing things workers can do is to create such tools for routine jobs. And it doesn’t have to take years and a mandate from the board of directors to get it done. Get the people together who perform a specific task, brainstorm and create the list, trial and improve it for a defined period of time, and then formalize the requirement to use it. Repeat with other routine tasks.

Check sheets are generally simple and easy to create. They promote consistency, clarity and accuracy, and take most of the decision-making out of routine tasks (greatly reducing the potential for human error).

What's New With Tools?

As I write this, I’m in a foreign country. This past Saturday I watched a guy trimming the top of a marble bathroom vanity with a grinding wheel. As he ground away, his assistant stood nearby. Neither wore any eye protection. Fortunately, nobody got hurt. Why did I even notice? Because for years, the Health & Safety folks in the US have drilled us with the need for proper PPE. It’s become ‘the way we do things’. We’ve learned. Consequently…far fewer people are getting hurt on the job.
